Sharing our early PFA experience at Heart Rhythm Congress 2026

Dr Lovell discusses balloon-in-basket pulsed field ablation and the feasibility of a conscious sedation workflow.

On 12 October 2026, I spoke at Heart Rhythm Congress on “Early clinical experience with a balloon-in-basket PFA solution and the feasibility of a conscious sedation workflow”.

The talk explored early experience with balloon-in-basket pulsed field ablation (PFA) and whether the procedure could be carried out using conscious sedation. This builds on our experience with the VOLT system at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

For patients, PFA is a catheter treatment that uses short electrical pulses to target heart tissue involved in atrial fibrillation. The balloon-in-basket design helps position the electrodes used to deliver the treatment.

Conscious sedation uses medicines to help a patient relax and feel sleepy while remaining responsive. The focus of the talk was the feasibility of incorporating this approach into the procedure, including how the care is organised around the patient.

Sharing early clinical experience gives heart rhythm teams an opportunity to discuss practical questions as new treatments are introduced.

The talk is listed in the HRC programme for 12 October 2026.
